Coaching The Player
The Role of the Individual Within The Team

by Bobby Howe. During the decade of the 1970's the Dutch National Team produced a style of soccer which was both innovative and exciting.

The style, later titled "Total Soccer," was created because of the multi-faceted talents of the players. Within the system of play, players were allowed to express themselves; they interchanged roles and rotated responsibiliteis but the balance and shape of the team remained intact.

The Dutch coach, Rinus Michels, had a wealth of talent from which he had to select and he built a system and operated in a style to accommodate those talents. While youth coaches are not able to work with players of the same quality, the principles of building a team are the same. Coaches must recognize the strengths and weaknesses of their players and use those players for the most part in areas of the field that will highlight their strengths and reduce the weaknesses.
